Baton Rouge Fitness

Martial Arts, Gyms, Gymnastics

Places you can stay fit or get into shape in Baton Rouge. I'm big into martial arts so I'll be able to list some martial arts places. There are a couple of good local gyms and my girlfriend took gymnastics so I list those places too.

Personal Recommendation

I recommend LA Boxing on the corner of Sherwood and Coursey(phone (225) 291-5269). After wasting money on regular gyms and attempting to get back in to martial arts for fitness I tried here. Their circuit training kickboxing/boxing classes will absolutely get you in to shape. With a barely reasonable diet and working out with LA Boxing 4 times a week you can lose 10% of your body weight in a few months. For me at 32 years old, 180 pounds and 22% body fat I got slightly committed with them. I worked out there 4 days a week, just ate less carbs and was down to 155 pounds and 13% body fat in 3 months. One of the things that made it easier is each trainer runs their own routines so if you simply rotate Mark's morning kickboxing class on Tuesday/Thursday with Calvin's boxing class on Monday/Wednesday you'll see big results. If you're looking for serious martial arts they offer world class boxing, jiu-jitsu and kickboxing trainers.

Gymnastics

  • Elite Gymnastics - Looked like a pretty cool place when we drove by. They were smart enough to have their website listed on their sign and they keep up with the site. Looks like they've got an Olympic champion teacher.

Gyms - Health & Fitness

  • Calloway's Health & fitness - Probably the largest and most popular single location Gym and fitness club in town and I can't find a website for them. All I can say is wow about that. The place is nice with indoor/outdoor pools, lots of equipment & classes. I went there for a good while. Located on Jefferson Hwy.
  • Southdown's Gym - I've heard that this is a pretty nice gym off Perkin's near College in mid-city.
  • Spectrum Fitness - Pretty nice fitness club with several locations all over the Baton Rouge area. Women really like these clubs because they have ladies only locations.
  • Anytime Fitness - I hear this is a corporate chain but I also hear that it rules if you work funky hours and need to work out on your own schedule.
  • LSU Recreation Center - If you're an LSU student or Alumni you must take advantage of this large athletic complex. You name it this place has it and alot of it. I list this here because you'd be suprised how many people don't know its there because its kind of hidden behind the LSU lakes.

Martial Arts

  • LA Boxing - A full access gym and MMA training facility. They offer circuit training classes for the average girl/guy that will absolutely get you in shape. They have weight lifting, cardio machines, boxing rings and mats that are available to members. Every trainer in their classes is a professional martial artist. Great place that's allowed me to lose 30 pounds in 6 months.
  • Gladiator's Academy - A full service MMA complex on Florida Blvd. that looks to have some great instructors for Boxing, Jiu Jitsu and kick boxing.
  • Heiwashin Dojo - This school teaches traditional Japanese Jujutsu which is the father art of the popular Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I have a friend that attends this school and speaks very highly of it.
  • Genbukan Ninpo Bugei - This is a small group of martial artists who train at City Park Lakes in Baton Rouge. They're the Louisiana Chapter of the Genbukan Ganseki Dojo in Houston, Tx.
