Finding Nuts and Bolts for suspension is a pain
So its January 2006 and I've finally got all the frame rails patched, shock
towers in and radiator support on for my 1969 Mustang chassis. Its painting
and ready to take a front end suspension kit that I ordered online. I get
the kit in and I've got upper/lower control arms, strut rod bushings, links,
spring seats BUT no nuts & bolts to attach the suspension to the chassis.
I do believe they expected me to have such hardware from my original front
end but mine was taken off 10 years ago and not so well cataloged so I'm
stuck. I have to run down these parts all over Baton Rouge.
Wayne must find...
The 1969 Mustang cam bolts were luckily available at a local parts store and I found upper control arm nuts & washers at a local fastener distributor distributor. Alignment shims for the upper control arms apparently haven't changed in price in the last 8 years as I picked up 4 packs of those. 1969 Mustang Strut Rod Nuts however are some sort of strange size that neither of the two bolt distributors carry. So I'm stuck and now it looks like I'm calling Ascension Pony Cars thats the local Mustang graveyard. Hopefully I can run down the strut rod nuts and a used strut rod as now that I'm looking at my passenger side rod, its shot. Otherwise I'm facing $50 for another new aftermarket rod and probably $25 worth of specialty rod nuts. Joe usually gives you a better price on his scrap stuff so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. |
They do sell master fastener kits but they're in the multiple hundreds of
dollars range.(See
Huge Price Suspension Hardware) Unfortunately I'm only missing a few
nuts and bolts in key areas in my suspension so its scavenger hunt for me.
But anyway for all you Mustangers out there; hold on to your old
fasteners and hardware they add up! I have however found a place online
that will sell individual parts as needed for your Mustang or whole kits at
a little more reasonable prices. AMK
Products has a great listing of all the parts you might need but make a
list because shipping is going to cost at least $7.(so if you just buy your
shock cap carriage bolts then you're paying $9 for the bolts and $7 for the
shipping.) I'm considering buying the master kits even though I don't need
all the parts simply because part hunting and shipping costs will probably
end up costing me more than if I just bought a master chassis fastener kit
and a master body fastener kit.
