The History of My Internet

I've often got to explain what I've been doing as my career for the better part of 10 years and its not always that easy to explain. Its not all that complicated in that I simply help my company make more money off of the Internet but the specifics of the matter aren't the easiest thing to dissect. Making money online is subject to dynamics requiring companies to go through a constant change in alliances and enemies as we all rise and fall in the tidal flow of the digital ocean. We're constantly changing direction and methods but theres always a cash flow and its been my job for the last 7+ years to grab as much as I can. We follow the money like predators follow their feed in the ocean. So in this little article I'll try to run down the Internet as I've seen it over time to describe what I've done and how it affects what I do now.

February 1998

I'm hired by my boss as an intern to do alot of dirty work for our company. I'm to check email, learn to use various email harvesters, html and basic programming. At this point I'd just changed my college focus to computer science so alot of this is new to me. At this point everything is still basic online as search engines are just developing and alot of focus is on directories such as Yahoo and marketing to AOL's large pool of users. Many now hardly known engines are top dogs at this time such as Altavista and Lycos. Memory is kind of hazy but at this time I believe MSN was powered by Inktomi and Yahoo is backending their results with Inktomi which made designing web content for this engine lucrative.
