1969 Ford Mustang Disc Brakes

They came off a Granada I had to tear down my front disc brakes on my 1969 Ford Mustang today so I could start putting my front end under the chassis. I'd been working so hard finding suspension parts that I'd completely forgotten to take the spindles off of my brakes sitting in the corner and knock the ball joints off of them.(tip: always have a BFHammer for ball joints) It occurred to me that not everyone knows that you can get disc brakes for your classic Mustang for little to nothing simply by hunting down similar old clunkers like the 70's model Granadas found in every junk yard in America.

Classic Mustang Brake Tip:

My 1969 Mustang came with front and rear drum brakes I think. Anyway I changed the brakes out with some disc brakes we found on an old late 70's Ford Granada. Worked like a charm. The best part about using these brake systems is that you can buy the replacement brake parts at big name parts stores(autozone, O'Reilly) for not much money at all. The only good thing to come of Ford using the same old junk on every car they build.

Car Gods Hate Me Right Now

I decided to break down my spindles today because I couldn't get anything else done for my car today. I spent two hours hunting down my air tools and getting situated to do any work so I didn't want to undertake putting all the front end together so late at night so I looked for something smaller to do.(thanks little brother) I had previously planned to do it over the weekend but Saturday my good friend Brandon Guedry has his first child and then Sunday my poor girlfriend hurt herself pretty bad so I had to drive her around. Right now I'm just satisfied with getting the spindles free so I can complete the little puzzle of getting the springs, control arms and spindle all back together under the car. In my chassis diagram is looks a little difficult but I guess I'll figure it out.

1969 ford mustang Disc Brakes Update(April 2006): I've gotten to putting the disc brakes back on my car and decided since I knew the parts were cheap to go ahead and buy new ones. 1/3 the price as if I purchased the original parts for a Ford Mustang. I tell you when I was in high school I did some serious ass hauling in my old Mustang and never had a problem stopping with the disc brakes I had on it. People are crazy if they go with the original stuff with there are other options available. Do a little research or talk to a professional car junky and find out how to save yourself dollars on classic car parts!

Mustang Disc Brake Searches: Just a little update for today because I've been trying to document everything that I've done to the car. About 2 hours breaking down and storing my disc brake parts and figuring out exactly what I'm ordering to finish the strut rod hanging is what I did today. A little patience and maybe one day I'll get it all back under there!
